Lucas Heights is a suburb in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is located approximately 35 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the Sutherland Shire. The postcode is 2234.
Lucas Heights was named after John Lucas Senior, a flour miller who in 1823 was granted 150 acres on the ‘head of unnamed stream into Georges River’. He built a water-driven mill for grinding corn using convict labour between 1822 and 1825.
The area was traditionally inhabited by the Dharawal people for millennia, who utilised local waterways for fishing and foraging. European settlement began with John Lucas’s land grant in 1823-1824. Following World War II, the Australian Atomic Energy Commission selected Lucas Heights for nuclear research, with construction commencing in October 1955 on the High Flux Australian Reactor (HIFAR), which achieved criticality and began operations in early 1958.
Lucas Heights is notable as the home of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), Australia’s sole operational research reactor facility. The OPAL (Open-pool Australian Lightwater) reactor was commissioned in August 2006 and officially opened in April 2007, replacing HIFAR. We bought and moved into our new home in the middle of 2023 and we knew wanted to make some updates to it. I was recommended Dura Group from a friend and we are over the moon with the work they have done.
We wanted to have a media/feature wall in our living room as it was just a plain space. Mark who is the owner at Dura Group came round, listened to our ideas and we also gave him some pictures of ideas we liked. He talked us through everything and gave us samples of the materials and colours we could choose from.
We picked the design and materials we wanted and Mark’s team turned it into reality. It looks even better than the picture idea we found. The team completed the work in 1 day and everything was made to measure.
Mark is so attentive, professional and kind. He kept us updated every step of the way with how the making of the cabinet was going.
We absolutely love our new media wall! It has added sophistication and elegance to our lounge. Thank you to Mark and the whole team. They are extremely good at what they do. Can’t recommend them highly enough.
